The history and founding of Agoo, La Union

Agoo was founded way back in the late 1500s and was the primary port of call for Japanese and Chinese traders at the time. This was due to there being an established Japanese colony in the township - in fact it was the first Japanese settlement in the country.

The town's role as a port was lost when the Spanish closed the Philippines to foreign trade during their occupation and by the time that trade was re-established the role of dominant port was inherited by Sual in Pangasinan.
